What is Tamiflu used for? Tamiflu is for treating adults, adolescents, and pediatric patients 1year of age and older with the flu whose flu symptoms started within the last day or two. Tamiflu is also used to reduce the chance of getting the flu in people aged 1 year and older who have a higher chance of getting the flu because they spend time with someone who has the flu. Tamiflu can also reduce the chance of getting the flu if there is a flu outbreak in the community. The use of Tamiflu to reduce the chance of getting flu has been studied up to 42 days in adults and up to 10 days in children.

Lipitor is a drug intended to help lower cholesterol. The generic name for this brand-name medication is atorvastatin.

What are the side effects of Lipitor (atorvastatin) cholesterol medication?

Lipitor has been an effective treatment for many people across the country who suffer from high cholesterol. It lowers your cholesterol and, therefore, lowers your risk of heart attack, heart disease, hardening of the arteries and stroke.

Like all prescription medications, Lipitor may cause some side effects during your treatment. There have been rare cases of muscle and liver problems developing with the treatment of Lipitor and other medicines which are similar. While you’re taking Lipitor, you must get in touch with your doctor immediately if you notice any unusual and unexplainable muscle pain, weakness, or tenderness. This is especially critical if you experience the above symptoms along with a fever, symptoms of the flu, gastrointestinal pains (stomach/abdominal pains), unexplained fatigue, pale stools (feces) or dark urine. These might be early signs of liver or muscle difficulties.

If you are experiencing any serious side effects, you must discontinue treatment with Lipitor and arrange a visit to the emergency room. If this emergency trip is not an option, then call your doctor immediately.

What are the most serious side effects of Lipitor medication?

Serious side effects of Lipitor include; allergic reactions (closing of the throat, swollen lips, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or tongue; and hives breakouts), decreased or rust-colored urine, or unusually blurry vision.

What are the most common side effects I could experience from Lipitor medication?

Other Lipitor side effects which are less serious are not such a pain, but there is a better chance you will have to deal with them. These side effects include headache, excess gas (flatulence), nausea or upset stomach, or a rash. If you notice any of these symptoms, you don’t have to stop taking Lipitor, but you should get in touch with your doctor as soon as possible.

Because science is not perfect, there may be other side effects besides those listed here. If you experience any other side effect that is unusual, unexplainable or especially annoying, make sure to arrange talk with your doctor.

Doctors have been encouraged to prescribe the cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins quite liberally. Patients who suffer heart attacks often have elevated levels of cholesterol, so statins like Lipitor are prescribed to lower the cholesterol. There have been no conclusive studies to prove the full effectiveness of these drugs, however, and some doctors worry that reducing cholesterol simply takes away the warning signs of heart disease. The drug companies also claim that statin drugs have a low, nearly nonexistent incidence of side effects. These claims are based on trials of the drug on a carefully screened group of people, hardly a representative selection of the general public. Considering the rigorous selection process for drug trials, it is hardly a surprise that 51% of prescription drugs found to have serious adverse side effects not detected prior to FDA approval.

As many as 98% of people using Lipitor or similar statin drugs experience muscle weakness. This is because the statins break down muscle tissue. A similar drug, Baycor, was removed from the market earlier this year after it caused muscle breakdown so severe that patients’ muscles broke down and flooded their kidneys with toxins. Twenty-six Baycor users died from muscle failure.

Though muscle damage, sometimes debilitating muscle pain and disintegration, is the most common side effect, statins have been found to cause many other serious adverse effects. Patients taking Lipitor have had a higher incidence of cancer, neuropathy, heart failure, dizziness, memory failure, and depression. The extent of these problems is far greater than anybody realizes because doctors often diagnose these side effects as problems relating to the original risk of heart disease, not the drug prescribed to treat it.

If you are taking Lipitor or another statin and develop muscle weakness or pain, stop taking the drug immediately. If you have strange side effects that doctors cannot seem to diagnose, it could be related to the statins. Above all, if you chose to take these drugs, take Co-Q10 supplements. This is an important liver enzyme whose production is blocked along with cholesterol. If you are suffering adverse effects from these popular drugs, add your voice to the public outcry of statin victims so that doctors, drug companies, and the FDA realize the extent of the problem. If you have been harmed or crippled by these drugs you should contact a lawyer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE On Naproxen And Aleve Side Effects
FDA Statement

Statement Dec. 20, 2004 Media Inquiries: 301-827-6242 Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA

FDA Statement on Naproxen Aleve side effects the FDA today released the following statement on NIH halting a clinical trial involving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients at risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with the National Institutes of Health to review the available scientific information on Naproxen Aleve following the decision of the National Institute on Aging to halt a clinical trial studying non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Preliminary information from the study showed some evidence of increased risk of cardiovascular events, when compared to placebo, to patients taking Naproxen Aleve.

In the meantime, FDA advises patients who are currently taking over-the-counter Naproxen Aleve products to carefully follow the instructions on the label. Patients should not exceed the recommended doses for Naproxen Aleve (220 milligrams twice daily) and should not take Naproxen Aleve for longer than ten days unless a physician directs otherwise. Patients with questions about Naproxen Aleve should consult their physicians.

Naproxen Aleve was first sold as a prescription drug under the trade name Naprosyn in 1976. FDA approved its use as an over-the-counter drug in 1994.

Ativan is the brand name of the drug lorazepam and the name we will refer to it for during this article. The Ativan side effects information was taken from several sources including http://en.wikipedia.org

Ativan has the effects of being sedative/hypnotic, muscle relaxant, anxiolytic, amnesic, and anticonvulsant and may be considered as “adverse effects,” or “side effects,” of Ativan if these are unwanted.

Direct Ativan adverse side effects can include sedation and hypotension; the effects of Ativan are increased in combination with other CNS depressant drugs. Other adverse effects of Ativan include confusion, ataxia, anterograde amnesia and hangover effects. With long-term use of benzodiazepines it is unclear whether cognitive impairments fully return to normal after cessation of therapy; cognitive deficits persist for at least 6 months post-withdrawal, but it is possible that longer than 6 months is required for recovery of cognitive function.

Ativan appears to have more profound side effects on memory than other benzodiazepines; Ativan impairs both explicit memory and implicit memory. In the elderly, falls may occur as a result of benzodiazepines. Adverse effects of Ativan are more common in the elderly, and they appear at lower doses than in younger patients. Benzodiazepines can cause or worsen depression. Paradoxical effects can also occur, such as worsening of seizures, or paradoxical excitement; paradoxical excitement is more likely to occur in the elderly, children, those with a history of alcohol abuse and in people with a history of aggression or anger problems.

Ativan’s side effects are dose-dependent, meaning the higher the dose, the stronger the effects (and side effects) will be. Using the smallest dose needed to achieve desired effects lessens the risk of side effects.

Sedation is the most complained-of side effect of Ativan. In a group of around 3500 patients treated for anxiety, the most common side effects complained of from lorazepam were sedation (15.9%), dizziness (6.9%), weakness (4.2%), and unsteadiness (3.4%). Side effects such as sedation and unsteadiness increased with age. Cognitive impairment, behavioural disinhibition and respiratory depression as well as hypotension may also occur.

Paradoxical effects: In some cases, there can be paradoxical effects with benzodiazepines, such as increased hostility, aggression, angry outbursts, and psychomotor agitation. These effects are seen as more common with Ativan than other benzodiazepines. Paradoxical effects are more likely to occur with higher doses, in patients with pre-existing personality disorders and those with a psychiatric illness. It is worth noting that frustrating stimuli may trigger such reactions, even though the drug may have been prescribed to help the patient cope with such stress and frustration in the first place. As paradoxical effects appear to be dose-related, they usually subside on dose reduction or on complete withdrawal of lorazepam.

Suicidality side effects: Benzodiazepines may sometimes unmask suicidal ideation in depressed patients, possibly through disinhibition or fear reduction. Ativan should, therefore, not be prescribed in high doses or as the sole treatment in depression, but only with an appropriate antidepressant.

Amnesic side effects: Among benzodiazepines, Ativan has relatively strong amnesic side effects, but patients soon develop tolerance to this with regular use. To avoid amnesia (or excess sedation) being a problem, the initial total daily Ativan dose should not exceed 2 mg. This also applies to use for night sedation. Five participants in a sleep study were prescribed Ativan 4 mg at night, and the next evening three subjects unexpectedly volunteered memory gaps for parts of that day, an effect that subsided completely after 2–3 days’ use. Amnesic side effects cannot be estimated from the degree of sedation present, since the two effects are unrelated.

Full lists of Ativan side effects:

For lists of Ativan side effects, refer to the manufacturers’ data sheets. Please note that some may list side effects for the entire benzodiazepine class, not the specific side effect profile for Ativan.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Compounding pharmacies are making a comeback – great news for men and women suffering with the side effects of aging. Compounding pharmacies can work with your doctor to create a personal bio-identical hormone replacement therapy plan that will minimize the symptoms of this difficult period of life.

The debate rages on as to whether or not people should be taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as they go through the change of life. There are, of course, advantages as HRT can help with some of the discomforts people endure, but there are also well known dangers from using the manufactured drugs produced by mass pharmaceutical manufacturers. Fortunately, compounding pharmacies are making a comeback, and men and women can now get bio-identical hormone replacement therapy to help their bodies weather this difficult time and slow the aging process too.

Shopping for easy fitting clothing touted as “one size fits all” can often be a frustrating exercise. Expecting hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to deliver exactly the same results for everybody can also result in disappointment or even side effects. Compounding pharmacies are working with doctors to create personalized HRT solutions that are tailored to each individual’s needs.

These specialized pharmacies put together medications and hormones, according to careful individual baseline measurements and continue monitoring the patient’s hormone levels during the entire treatment period. The therapy uses bio-identical hormones – hormones that are molecularly identical to those produced by the human body. The goal is to give the lowest possible dose of the ideal mix of estradiol, estriol, progesterone, cortisol, testosterone or DHEA (a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and believed to help to lower abdominal fat in older women and men.

Yes, men too are afflicted by the effects of aging and reduced hormone production. Male menopause is often referred to as Andropause, from the Greek – andro (male) and pause (stop).

In addition to controlling the unpleasant “hot flashes,” night sweats and sleep deprivation associated with menopause, there are additional benefits to bio-identical therapies:

• Estradiol in a topical ointment application, such as a gel or cream, supports reducing facial lines in aging skin and enhances its firmness.

• Progesterone used in an individually compounded extended release tablet is good for bone building, brain function and as an overall hormone regulator.

• Androgen enhances libido, and also brings down cholesterol levels, improves calcium retention for strong bones and improves energy and alertness.

Getting these helpers into the body so they can do their work can be accomplished via many delivery systems, such as patches, gels, creams, or suppositories. These methods bypass the liver and the digestive system for more reliable and speedy absorption. Specially formulated capsules are also available and designed for quick trips to the bloodstream.

Compounding pharmacies not only work together with the patient’s physician, many of them also have their own experts on staff whose business it is to stay informed about best HRT practices and to help develop the best hormone “cocktail” for each person.

Everybody goes through the aging process in their own unique way making their need for individualized hormone replacement plans. Compounding pharmacies make it possible to get a unique solution tailored for each person’s unique needs.

RESOURCE BOX: If you are looking for a compounding pharmacy in the Los Angeles area that specializes in bio-identical hormones, Advanced Compounding Pharmacy at http://www.cmpdrx.com is highly recommended by author Stephen Daniels. Their staff works with your doctor or naturopath to find the best hormone replacement therapy plan for you.
